Over the next couple of weeks the Torquay greens will ooze class as we host the best of mid-week and weekend events, and the annual Surf Coast Classic.

On Tuesday, the greens will be filled with the grand finals of the Tuesday pennant competitions in all grades.

Play begins at 10.30am on what promises to be an excellent showcase for our superb playing surface, produced by master greenkeeper Bill Hamshere and his band of assistants.

All club facilities will be open, and a sausage sizzle will be available from noon.

As another feather in the club’s cap, our greens were chosen for the Bellarine-Ballarat challenge clash which was held on Friday.

Next weekend the Torquay men are to play off for the premiership, having won through by beating Lara convincingly in their semi-final. Victory will see them regain Premier League status. Go Torquay.

Also coming up is our own major event, the Surf Coast Classic, sponsored by Hocking Stuart Real Estate, which draws top-flight bowlers from around the state, and provides a fantastic spectacle of bowls.

This year, the Classic, which will be held on March 16 and 17, has drawn players from the Bendigo, Ballarat, Wodonga, Werribee, Melbourne, Horsham, the Warrnambool districts and the cream of Geelong and district.

Anyone aspiring to take up the game would be well-served in coming along and having a look.

Also on the horizon is our annual grudge match between the pennant players and the Twilighters. Plans are advancing for the evening to be developed into a feature of the season, but we will have more on that next time.

And while on the subject of the Twilighters, the section held is first championships recently, with Peter Forbes winning in Division 1, and Rod Salisbury taking Division 2. Peter did look quite the part in his champion’s jacket, a la the Australian Masters golf title.

The club thanks Alcoa, Barry Plant Real Estate and Crown Plaza for their support over the season.
